A dwarf with the Thresher skill can process rope reeds and pig tails into rope reed thread and pig tail thread at the farmer's workshop.
With a loom and a dwarf with the weaver profession, the weaver automatically will collect spider silk webs and giant cave spider silk webs that are on the ground. This converts the webs into silk thread.
Unlike most intermediate materials cloth has quality values. Better skill in the weaver profession increases value of the final good, especially if clothier isn't capable of creating anything with good quality.
