Have you started your fort in on the coast of an ocean? Do you have problems finding water? If you answered "yes" to the above you have come to the right the place.

[edit] How?

The simplest way of purifying water is by pumping it. When pumped through a screw pump, water becomes fresh and thus drinkable. Water will no longer count as fresh if it contacts saltwater, or connects to a saltwater aquifier level (even if walled off).

[edit] Building an Effective Tank

Step 1 Dig a channel away from the water (if your operator doesn't know how to swim he will cancel his job due to the waves).

Step 2 Dig out the tank, it must be one space away from the channel so you will have room for the pump.

Step 3 Construct walls and a ramp (so you exit) around the inside of the tank. Then channel out the floor and replace it with your own floor.(both the floor and the walls can be built from any material)

Step 4 Construct the pump like you normally would.

Step 5 Watch as you new water tank fills nice, drinkable freshwater.

Optional Stuff If the channel leads in to your fort you may want to block it off by placing bars, that way you make sure nobody can use it as an entrance.

Your tank can easily be expanded to support more than one Z-Level by repeating step 3 on lower levels.
