[edit] How do I make steel?
The recipe for steel is:
When the above items are combined at a smelter, the product is two bars of steel; the carbon and flux are lost in the reaction, but the pig iron and iron are combined into steel.
Read the Steel page for more information.
[edit] How do I make glass?
In order to produce glass, sand must be gathered in bags using a task available at a glass furnace. You must designate a sand-gathering zone from the (i)-menu that includes a sandy area, in order for this task to succeed. Gathering sand requires item hauling whilst moving sand bags to stockpiles requires furniture hauling. You will need spare bags in order to collect sand.
Once you have bags of sand you can order glass to be created at the furnace.
[edit] How do I make cloth?
You need thread; a dwarf Thresher skill can process rope reeds and pig tails into rope reed thread and pig tail thread at the farmer's workshop or you can collect spider silk.
Once you have thread a dwarf with the weaver skill can process it into cloth at a loom. Also you can make cloth from Spider Silk which can be made into cloth as soon as it is harvested.
